Make Ringtones in iTunes
Yep, make your very own ringtones from music you already have. All you need to do is find a music track, or any sound that you like, and follow a few simple instructions. You can define the length, time, and person you want the ringtone to be associated with. Do you and your lover have a favorite song? Do you dislike someone and want a vomiting sound to notify you when they are calling? Whatever your flavor, you can make it a reality. Again, for free.
Open iTunes and find a track that you like. Right click it and go to Get Info. Then select the Options tab…
- Check off the start time and stop time. You can then put in the time frame you want (under 30 sec)
- Click OK. Then right click again. Select Create AAC Version.
- If you don’t see that selection you might be seeing Create MP3 version. To fix that, go to Preference > General > Import Settings. At the top change the Import Using drop down to say AAC Encoder. Click on OK. Go back to the file and right click to get Create AAC Version.
- Now in iTunes, the file will be listed twice. Right click the new one and select Show in Finder. The new file should have an .M4A extension. Change the file name to .M4R. (ringtone).
- Return to iTunes and right-click on the file you created and delete it (send it to the trash)
- Drag the .M4R file you renamed into iTunes.
- Click on Ringtones on the left and you should see it. So, the next time you sync your iPhone, you should notice that it’s available.
- Find the contact you want the ringtone associated with and add it!

When making your own ringtones you need to add another step. Once you have uploaded the file as m4r and its in your ringtones folder, you need to go back to the original track, go to ‘Get Info’ and then the ‘Options’ tab again and uncheck ‘Start Time’ and ‘Stop Time’ otherwise the track will only play the short clip
